Hello People, Well, once again, 2 seconds after posting to the listserv, I found the answer to my question on the Apple discussion boards. [1]
What is more interesting, is that it appears that Leopard uses gzipped [2] man pages to save space... but for those folks doing an upgrade install (like me) the upgrade didn't remove the old uncompressed man pages. Hence, when I used 'man ls', I got the old man page, which did not explain the extra @ in 'ls -la'. IMHO, the upgrade install for Leopard must have multiple such glitches in it, because there seem to be multiple things which work fine in clean installs which fail in upgrade installs (anything using SIMBL [3] for instance, like PithHelmet [4]). Maybe this extra info is worth the extra static from the first message. Bill [1] <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6225124> [2] gzip is the gnu version of zip for bundling and archiving files.
