Thanks to one and all for your help.
I was able to make a disk image using Superduper when I remembered a Mac
formatted hd I keep hooked up to the 9600. It copied just fine
there---no bad descriptor messages.
When I mounted it and booted from the os9 system it worked fine, just no
mouse since the bluetooth drivers werent there. Dead in the water.
Your suggestion of the Mighty Mouse saved the day since my original
wired mouse had died long ago.
I was then able to change the boot system and restart in os 10.3.9 and
all is well.

I haven't yet installed Leopard and the extra ram. I have them both. I
got crucial ram for the user slot. I really need that machine so I
hesitate to try the factory slot upgrade. Thermal paste----and all those
wires.

Any particular issues I should know about before doing the Leopard?
Besides the clock speed hack.
I hate system upgrades.

Thanks,
Ann
