I've been using POP for my email clients for a long time.
Now that I'm using an iPhone as well, IMAP seems a logical step.

But I have a few questions. Currently I'm using gmail and have it set
up as IMAP in Mail.app.
But it's downloaded all my emails from my gmail "All Mail" folder/
label (several years worth).

the first problem with this is that i'm on a laptop, and space is an
issue. The second problem is that it seems that everytime an mail is
added to the "All Mail" folder, Time Machine backs up the entire
folder (over a GB worth). Not only is this a drain on my network, it
will quickly fill up my backup drive.

My question is this: what is the best way to set up IMAP for use with
the iPhone/a laptop?

Is it possible to to the following:

Mail.app: keep only local copies of messages in my inbox (not every
message that is on the servers). When I delete a message in my inbox
in Mail.app, have it archive it on the gmail servers.

iPhone: archive messages on gmail servers when deleted from iPhone
inbox?

I really like using IMAP because it keeps my inboxes synced across all
my machines, but I don't want to have to keep years of email locally
on my machine.
thanks,

rick
