This may be just me, but I had a similar issue with the mouse draining  
batteries and found a solution. I was using rechargeable batteries and  
they just didn't hold up. I then allowed it to eat the alkaline  
batteries thinking that was just the nature of the beast. However, I  
tried the Energizer ones that say "made for electronics" or something  
on the label and they worked well (I think the mouse may even have  
come with a pair....). They cost quite a bit more, but the last time I  
changed the batteries was this summer.
