Suzanne, what do you mean "it's in my finder?" Are you referring to the dock? If so, the dock icon might not have linked itself to the new application. Drag the old dock icon to the trash and replace it with the new one.
Also, how long are you waiting for it to do something? FF3 has a nasty habit of taking a seemingly long time starting sometimes. IIWY, I'd just download it again and replace it again. Make an archive of the old version and delete the app. It's not like Firefox to not work.
