Since I had thought everybody on the mailing list had gotten the
letter, but apparently did not, here is my first answer to the
questions posed, before I finally wrote to the group, since nothing
had been forthcoming from the members, and I felt the problem should
be addressed.

Tom, I don't feel at all this way. do these people now talk only
about the meetings or do they want to know by writing email? - I am
not a tech, I have these computers and I ask any question I have,
and I always get a kind soul to answer. I don't have a business, I
used to teach at the UofL and there had an Apple 2e. I learned by
asking questions.
I know these gurus are not the most inviting people, meaning they
don't fall all over you, and make coffee at the meetings, I tried to
remedy that long ago, but then you do have to make your presence
known, tell them to listen to you, you are also around and they once
were also on your level.
I am too old to drive at night, so I don't get to the meetings,
except when I really want to, then I ask to be taken .
Now as to the group and their emailing, I find it wonderful. Half of
the time I don't understand when somebody asks something about
which I know nothing, however, even in the most technological
discourse, I do usually find some little morsel that gets stuck ,
and all of a sudden, maybe months later, I get the "aha" moment.
When I ask a question and Lee gets a bit esoteric, then I call him
down to my level, and he performs marvellously well in common bread
and butter language.
I am asking Janette and Herb, did they ever pose a question to the
group ? If they don't email the group, how will the group know what
to answer? I really wished there would be more beginners asking
questions, perhaps I might get the privilege to post an answer
myself. What accomplishment that would be!.
I think this group bouncing around questions is a wonderful bunch
of all sorts, many of them even have a sense of humor and it is
always great to be given insights and pointers and tips. And since I
have ittle tech expertise, I give my wild side kicks, just to be
heard in some way.
So Herb, and Janet and whoever is out there feeling outcast, I
invite you to bring your questions, and I am sure some of those of
the tech Elite will give you an answer.
Let me tell you my first question which I posed to the now famous
Tech-Guy of the New York Times , David Pogue, who at that time tried
to help as he was learning himself. Well , my address book sported
the Alphabet beginning with the Z all of a sudden, a terrible thing.
I was unable to get the A back on the top. So I emailed him and was
told that there was a small triangle which, when being clicked,
would bring the world back into order. And he added a few things of
that humor he is famous for. This small attempt even ended in a
friendship with the whole Pogue family. So you never know what may
lie at the end of that tech-question-path.
P.S. Now if you have specific questions which cannot be answered by
anybody via email, because they "need" to really "SEE" and handle
your computer, you can always go to the Apple store. You can make an
appointment at the "Genius" Bar there, and, believe me, not all of
them are geniuses either, and get 20 minutes very personal attention
to your questions. I am well know there, too, for my persistence.

TOM -
I feel the same way. I have a Mini. The meetings are more
entertainment than helpful to me.
I have problems that I am not interested in solving with bought
software or the latest Mac's.
Way back when I had questions there seemed little interest in
helping.

Tom, I don't know if my input would mean anything to your group,
but here is why I no longer belong. The group is made up
largely of professional people who use their macs
professionally, which is great for them. But when an individual
like me sits down with them, it's like being in a room full of
people not speaking my language. Like many Mac users, I have
problems as well as questions; in addition, I use a G3 Powerbook
which, although updated with the latest OS, is like a Model T to
the membership. Needless to say, the Mac users club was not
geared to my type of usage. There are probably many like me,
and I wish there was a group that could speak our language,
which is not the latest tech stuff from Apple. I have a
daughter with a Macbook, and, like me, she just uses it at
home. She has many unanswered questions too. There simply is
no place for us to go to get answers. I started out (as an
educator) using the very first Apples and continued keeping up
to date until my retirement in 1993. I also had the first
computerized school library in Illinois. My computer is truly
my window on the world, but where is there anyone to help those
of us who do not avidly keep up with the latest? I love my
Powerbook, and compared to my daughter's new Macbook, it still
does almost the same job with some features her new Mac does not
have. I wouldn't trade this one for hers. I do have DSL which
helps with speed, and I'm going to check out the new Cricket
modem, but I'll break anyone's arm who tries to take my G3 away
from me! I do want to add that I feel there needs to be a group
for the more advanced users even though it didn't answer my
needs. Thanks for "listening," Tom. Jan Woodard
