Anne, I use iCal all the time, not near as nice as Now Contact but due to the sync feature I will continue to use, at least until Nighthawk is out.
As far as you not being able to add an event I don't understand for I have never had this. With this problem and the time situation if I were you I would first use Disk Warrior and then TechTools. I have had these two programs clean us huge messes in the past. If they didn't correct the problem I would reinstall OS X. You are having too many strange things but give the utility programs a try first.
