I know that it'll take the XSi's .CR2 files.

Any ideas? Are RAW file formats camera specific, and I need a hopeful
update from Apple?

Funny you should ask about the new Rebel. Someone else was just complaining to me about the same thing last week. The format of the RAW file is dependent on the camera because it's the raw image off the hardware. To make matters even worse, the major camera makers actually encrypt parts of their RAW files making it darn near impossible for anyone to write software to work with their RAW files without official blessing.
