The operating system on erdos.math.louisville.edu will be upgraded on Thursday or/and Friday of this week. During the upgrade, erdos will not be available. When it comes back online, all the services will be restored eventually, starting with Web serving and email.

Notice that in order to make things even more confusing, we decided to do this at the same time as the new UofL VPN/Firewall stuff. Here's the announcement from IT:

Remote access through the firewall is being transitioned to the use of Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology. As a result, all rules allowing remote access to university computing resources will be removed from the university firewall on June 19, 2009.

Services that are going to be removed are ftp (21), ssh (22), telnet (23), Microsoft remote desktop (3389), PCAnyWhere (5631 and 5632), and VNC (5800, 5900).

To prevent a disruption in service you will need to request a VPN account for all users needing remote access. Users who are not university personnel will need to have a sponsored account created prior to receiving a VPN account. To request a sponsored account go tohttp://louisville.edu/it/accounts/computeraccounts.html and select Sponsored Accounts from the list. To request a VPN account, go tohttp://louisville.edu/it/accounts/vpn.
