Satellite is the only alternative to dial-up and the cheapest is
three times what I pay for dial-up. This may just push me over the
edge, though, in spite of living on my father's pension while I take
care of him. Most people near me don't mind paying for satellite
because they want it for television anyway (I hear that antenna
reception is pretty bad here, but I haven't had a tv since 1996, so
I don't know first hand) which makes it feel cheaper.
The newer models do not include a dial up modem.
An you can not hook a USB modem to their USB ports.
Drat! There goes that alternative. I'm going to hang on to this one,
because I will get satellite eventually (if the cable company never
reaches here, or Broadband over Power never gets out of committee)
and the Macbook has 802.11n.
I found some used ones here:

I just ordered a new Airport base station, because the modem in my
"saucer" base station from about 2003 is dying. I did not read the
specs closely, it seems, because the 801.11n model _has no modem_.
Now what do I do?
It's not horribly inconvenient being plugged into the wall while
I'm still on crutches because I can't carry a computer around
anyway, but I need to find a solution really fast, because the
Macbook has no internal modem, so I can only get online with one
computer. And I'm not really happy about spending yet more money
when I'm looking at ER bills soon.
