Before pulling batteries, Jeff, she should try a softer approach. While holding down the Command (apple) and Option keys, she should press the Escape key. After a few seconds, this usually gives the option to force applications to quit, and once she's forced the problem child program to quit the beach-ball usually goes away.

Subject: [MacGroup] won't shut down
Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 17:55:18 +0000

My friend has an iBook G4. For days now, she's seen a pink/green/ blue/yellow disk spinning on her desktop without any arrow being present.

She's held down the power button but that won't shut her off. She's also tried open apple+Q to no change.
I've not seen nor had my hands on it but am reporting her experience.

Any recommendations/suggestions are most appreciated.
Thanks much,
Jeff
