Suzanne, some things to try:

1. Start it up from an external disk with a known good system
2. Start it up in FireWire Target Disk Mode and access its drive from another computer (hold down the "T" key when starting up until you get the floating FireWire icon on your screen) 3. Take the hard drive out an put it in an enclosure and use it as an external drive on another computer (this is not a solution for the faint of heart, though, as the lampshades were not designed for user disassembly and the hard drive is the second-hardest part to get at)

My lampshade is sick and won't start up. I can't even start up from a disk because I can't get the drawer open. I'd like to get some old photos off of it before it retires for good. Do I need to take it to the vet?
