Suzanne,

If you are going to be doing any serious amount of transcribing, the best investment you can make is in a foot-pedal controller that will allow you to start and stop the recording while leaving your fingers on the keyboard. I have recently bought one that works with digital recordings on my Mac via a USB port. I don't have the company name or price handy, but can probably find it if you're interested.

Dear Ones,
Sorry to be a Luddite, but I am fresh out of cassette recorders and want to do an oral history of an old lady. What equipment do I need? I am reluctant to make her talk directly into my computer mike. I will use the recording as a Dictaphone unless there is some transcription program that doesn't cost more than $50 (fat chance.)
