I sure don't have an answer but since you wrote that you have had a
lot of trouble with you 17" MBP I would try my favorite stew.
I always use Diskwarrior to rebuild the directory, then I run
TechTools Pro suite and finally I check and repair permissions also
using TechTools. Sometimes I finish it off with a Cocktail (software,
not a drink). May be overkill but I have had dozens and dozens of
these machines since 1984 and with few exceptions these two pieces of
software have cured MANY ills. Others may have a better solution.
