Anne-
I started to answer you in my own words, but found this discussion
which I copied/ pasted:
I am frustrated as i spent two hours updating mobile me contacts to
have them lost. How do I change direction of sync (ie computer to
mobile me vs mobile me to computer)? I cannot seem to remember how to
change it, depending on what computer I am using. Thanks.

When you first do a sync (or restart after having turned it off) you
are asked whether you want the device in question to over-ride
MobileMe, or MobileMe to over-ride it, or to merge data. If you have
more than one computer or device you would pick one to be the master,
and have that over-ride MM; then with the others you would have MM
over-ride them. After that there is no 'direction' or it wouldn't be a
sync; any change will be reflected on all devices and MM after a sync
has taken place.
So in your case you should turn off syncing (on all computers if you
have more than one), decide where the correcrt set of information it,
and restart syncing on that machine proceeding as above.
So you won't see the arrows indicating which direction it will synch
unless it is the first time synching. I'll keep looking to see if
there is anything else that explains it better.

On the computer(s) that you DO NOT want to synch with MobileME, I
think simply going to your System Preferences, and choosing
MobileMe (under Internet & Network), then in the MobileMe settings,
choose the Sync tab, and un-click Synchronize with MobileMe, or you
could just make sure it is set for synching Manually instead of
Every Day, Weekly, etc...
