[MacGroup] mail problem

I ran into a problem today that I really do not know how to handle.  
What happened was I
attempted to send a attachment today that was larger than I realized.  
After letting it run
for three or four minutes I decided to stop the sending but was  
unable to stop .  I quit mail
and shut my computer down. When I went back to mail it was still  
sending. It finally stopped
but I do not know why. Is there an easy way to do that?
