You know John, I have both Flip4Mac and VLC on my mac, and I'd
forgotten about Flip4Mac. Actually, when I play a video, I have no
idea what is opening/ converting/ playing it. It all happens so
seamlessly. I did a search of Flip4Mac vs. VLC and got this answer:

<Flip4Mac only provides support for Microsoft video codecs whereas
Perian provides that and more. I'm not sure you actually need Flip4Mac
if you have Perian, but Flip4Mac is what Microsoft now offer instead
of their own media player for Mac which they discontinued. I have both
installed.
VLC on the other hand is a media player application that can be used
as an alternative to the Quicktime player. It uses the same open
source codec library as Perian and adds support for some more esoteric
codecs/formats. However, I very rarely come across a video file that
only VLC can play.
What VLC does offers over the Quicktime player is proper playlist
support. Although you can achieve simple playlist functionality using
Quick Look by selecting multiple files in Finder and pressing the
space bar or Cmd-Y. >
I love it when my boss - a Windoze XP user - can't open a file and
will send it to me to easily convert on my Mac. "It just works..."
