Bill:

I have been reading my email, and I am happy that you have found a solution. But I have a question too.

What do you do with all those photos?

I have 4025 pics on iphoto, and perhaps another thousand or so dating back to WW2. And I'm not sure what to do with mine either. On of my photos was printed in Road and Track, and another won the 1988[?] national Kodak contest, but other than that, they are of very little interest to anyone.

Happy to report success, at least in the end result.
Thanks all for your suggestions, my photos are so important to me, I decided to not touch them, but to look for what else I could easily move off the MBP to allow enough room to edit a movie. I choose my folders of documents, pdf's and spreadsheets. Moved these to a external and freed up several gigs. Now I can decide which documents are important enough to re-install
I'll probably end up getting a portable drive later.
Thanks again.

Moving say, a thousand picture files might not give you the space required to edit video files, even if its temporary. I would suggest investing in a portable drive, they have them up 500 Gb now, in the case of Seagate, and are fairly reliable. Not all drives last forever.

Well group, that subject line tells my problem. I need to remove - but not delete forever - pictures from my MacBook Pro, in order to free up some space. Many of the discussions I've found talk about moving my iPhoto library to a new spot on the external hd and telling the MBP where to find iPhoto when it starts up again.
I don't think I want that.
Can't I just move a thousand iPhoto pics to another drive, use the free space for movie importing, editing, etc., and maybe later, move same pics back?

Maybe if I had one of those portable external hard drives, I would feel better about moving the iPhoto library permanently, but for now, all I have are these desktop externals that I wouldn't want to travel with.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bill Micou
