Jonathan, I'm grateful for your helpful response. Thanks to you, I think I'm finally beginning to understand how DropBox works. Since some of the files (and folders) that I want to sync with the clone are already on the clone and I want to avoid duplication, can I simply erase the hard drive on the laptop clone, then put the entire hard drive on my desktop into the proper DropBox folder and "send" that to the clone, or are there bad consequences to erasing the hard drive of the clone?
