There are several things you should try before grabbing the nuclear option. The easiest is to hit command+option+escape to bring up the list of running programs from which you can execute the one causing the problem. This works almost all the time. Nuking the machine can do all sorts of bad things because it doesn't give the OS a chance to properly close off files, leaving them incomplete or even damaged.
