The old advice that you should leave your machine on to do housekeeping during the wee hours is no longer valid. With Snow Leopard, Apple switched from cron to launchd for scheduled tasks. It is now smart enough to do the housekeeping the next time it gets the chance, if it's sleeping or off during the normally scheduled time.
