I have always had Preview set as the default PDF reading program rather than Reader because it loads so much faster. Once or twice this millennium I've come across files that Reader handles more correctly. Reader does does few things that Preview doesn't do as well, like the display of facing pages and copying a column of text. I'd stay away from Reader just to avoid the passel of security bugs that have plagued it.
