Thanks, Lee. I have never deleted anything securely. I just came
across the box in the Finder advanced preferences I had not noticed
before which apparently deletes everything securely if you check it.

On an ordinary delete, the disk space is freed up for reuse, but the
data isn't actually removed. A secure delete actually removes the
data.
A secure delete gets rid of a file so completely that a disk
recovery program cannot get at its data. The disadvantage is that it
takes longer. If you're worried that somebody might steal your
computer and recover your deepest and darkest secrets, then a secure
delete is what you want.
I don’t think I've ever securely deleted anything.
