Harry- This may be too late, and the price may not be right, but there is an app to help find duplicate itune files, or really any type of file on your Mac.
look at Tidy Up! at: http://www.hyperbolicsoftware.com/TidyUp.html I had used a previous version and it does all they say it will. One nice feature that I thought was good - it will not let you delete both copies of a file.
