I can't find any clear pricing for the data plan, so the cheaper part is still
up in the air. Will Verizon's "unlimited data unless you go over 5GB" plan be
in effect? (Still waiting for some sort of class-action on that one.) Will they
have "hot-spots"?

For a few people, the new CDMA network will be a problem because it apparently
can't do data and voice at the same time. So, you won't see any ads from
Verizon with people talking on the phone and choosing their restaurant at the
same time. The CDMA phone will be useless as a phone in Europe.

Anything either AT&T or Verizon does will blow away Edge.

I may switch when my contract's up because, when I visit my relatives in
Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, AT&T is pretty much nonexistent north of
Green Bay, while Verizon has full bars all over the place. The same thing
happens when we visit my wife's family near Eugene, Oregon. (Until about 18
months ago I couldn't raise any bars from AT&T in my Eastern Jefferson County
kitchen.)
