One gets the feeling that a lot of this iCloud stuff isn't quite ready for
prime-time. Maybe it was rushed out because they knew Steve Jobs couldn't wait
for them to finish. They just barely made it in time as it is.

Here are a few examples that have been bothering me:

Apple has a tech note out saying we can use standard IMAP for email, but I'll
be darned if I can get a standard IMAP client to connect to my iCloud mail —
and I've tried three different ones. Apple's mail program in Lion can connect
and iOS 5 can also connect, so I know the user ID and password are correct. The
Connection Doctor transcript in Mail shows they aren't quite using standard
IMAP. Even then, they are often slow, as is the Web interface.

In iOS, Pages, Numbers and Keynote can store their docs out on the iCloud, but
their counterparts on Lion haven't been upgraded to do so. At the Stevenote
where all this stuff was introduced, the document access was promised to be
seamless between the Mac and iOS. There's an inconvenient workaround involving
the iCloud Web page, but the seams show.

Apple ID management is really a joke. For example, my daughter did the Lion
upgrade yesterday and wanted to start using Mail with an Apple ID. Her current
ID is her email address at the college she's attending because that's what she
used to sign up for iTunes. She's having a terrible time getting an iCloud
address because the system wants to default everything to her college address.
I'm also having troubles because sometimes Apple's servers want
[email protected] and other times they want [email protected].

These are glitches that will be worked out. I still think this whole iOS 5 and
Lion upgrade should have been rolled out in bite-sized pieces for testing under
heavy load.
