Lee,

Thanks for the reply

I was thinking it might be the power supply also, but I can't figure out how
the fan can operate or how the start-up process is even able to begin at if the
power supply isn't working. Seems to me like there should either be power
available, or not be power....but my wife says she thinks the power level
requirement increases as the start-up progresses, and the power supply is
failing as the start-up gets further along. Do you think this accurate?

PS I do have a couple of newer Mac computers, and currently thinking about a
new G5 (probably iMac) but this G3 was kind of my wife's baby that she's had
since before she retired. It's just slightly slower than the newer computers
and has been a very faithful workhorse for years. It also has all kinds of
software etc that she uses for graphic design (that only work in pre- OS X
software). So I don't really want to have to replace all that software for a
new computer, if I can fix this one.

So what is most likely the problem?

My guess would be the power supply. They're about $50 from places like
iFixit.com and UsedMac.com and are actually pretty easy to replace on those old
G3s. But, you can get a whole used G4 for $100 or so, or even a G5 for $200,
both of which blow the doors off your G3.
