If it just shuts down completely, I'd guess overheating or the power supply.

There are several programs that can check for overheating: iStat Menus, 
Temperature Gauge, SystemPal and probably a bushel or so of others. The one I 
use is iStat menus.

You can also peruse the activity logs, but there's usually nothing useful there 
when the machine just blinks off.
