Well, I know that I contradict Lee at the peril of being proved a fool, but, IIRC, iTunes has always allowed you to burn regular CDs from DRMed music.
So, as many discovered, to remove the DRM, simply burn a CD and re-import it. At that time it wouldn’t let you burn an MP3 CD or any form of digital conversion, other than to Audio CD format. I have not tried this with recent versions of iTunes, but it may still work. Also, purchasing iTunes Match will also un-DRM much (if not all) of your historical iTunes store purchases.
