I have multiple accounts which are true accounts (my work account, a gmail
account because of relatives who like gmail, and my iCloud account). I can send
mail from any of them without any problem [1]. I just cannot send mail from an
email address which is not explicitly tied to a separate incoming account.

If I try to set up other accounts to have multiple email addresses via aliases,
Mail.app helpfully decides to change all the email addresses to the aliases I
add. If I put in a comma-separated list of email addresses, Mail.app decides
that there a particularly poorly named email address which has commas and
spaces and many @ symbols in it. So... it appears that 'alias' means 'Apple
iCloud alias' and that only.

Argh.

[1] Almost. I added a gmail account and had to quit and restart Mail.app so
that it would show up as a possibility for responding to this email.
