I don’t know what the problem is, but I’ll make a few suggestions for what you can look at. (1) I assume you have the new drive in a USB box. Try a different box to see if the drive controller makes a difference. (2) A 3 T partition should be on a drive formatted GUID instead of AFP. The maximum size of an AFP partition is about 2.2 T. Some of the newer machines see a 3 T AFP partition as 2.3 T. The older ones often don’t see it at all. A G5 machine can usually see a large GUID partition, but can’t boot off it.
