It depends on the VPN service. Most of them have a program you can download 
that does the work of connecting your machine. The most common VPN methods have 
support built into OS X and iOS; the software just configures and starts the 
connection up.

The ones I’ve used are really easy. On OS X, when you run the software for the 
first time, it asks you for your username and password with the VPN company. 
Then a dropdown shows up in your menu bar, listing the available proxy 
locations. After you choose one, it connects in a few seconds, and everything 
runs normally as though the proxy isn’t being used. When you’re done with it, 
choose the dropdown again to disconnect.

I actually have two VPN dropdowns on my menu bar. The one I mentioned before 
for Private Internet Access <https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/> and 
another to connect to UofL. The latter is for bypassing the UofL firewall by 
making it seem as though my machine is on campus.
