If you want to be able to save programs from you cable box. You can get a Tivo 
and then use software to download it to your Mac.
I use iTivo to do this

You can not down load anything off a regular cable box they are locked down and 
you can not access the files on them.
Some shows do have a copyright Flag set and you can not down load them but many 
programs do not.
Archivo is another mac software for downloading tivo files but I don't use it 
because it does not see my main tivo only my father in laws one.
