Back in Lion(??), Apple added file versions to the operating system. Programs taking advantage of this feature save incremental changes to the drive as you work. This allows you to revert to older versions of the file. There are some conditions that must be met for this to work: The volume must be formatted as HFS+ journaled. The partition table must be GUID and not the ancient AFS. The program must support versions. (I don't use Excel, so I don't know whether it does.) Most of the Apple programs are enabled. You must leave automatic backups turned on. If any of these are not true, then you might get this message. All it means is the file was saved in the old-fashioned way without any version information.
