I have it installed. It keeps an eye on the hard drives in a pretty benign 
manner. You can set it to periodically run SMART checks and watch for free 
space. Mine is set to do a SMART check every four hours and to make sure the 
drive is less than 85% full. It will automatically email me when either check 
has a problem.

It also keeps a backup of the volume directory, which can make it easier to 
restore a nuked volume.

I’d say you are walking on the edge with that drive. There’s only about 2% of 
free space, so I’m not surprised there are problems optimizing it. If you can’t 
throw out a bunch of stuff, I think you ought to splurge on a bigger drive.
