She was preceded in death by her husband Dayton and her son Michael Edie. While this relationship was formally established in 1994, she initiated it in the 1970's when she founded the Mainz Committee after convincing Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane that Louisville needed to establish a Sister City relationship with Germany (at the time, Louisville's Sister Cities relationships were maintained by the Mayor's Office). In 1994, after learning that the Sister City relationship had not been formalized, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson and Mainz Mayor Herman-Hartmut Weyel met to formalize the relationship. Marta was a beloved German Professor at the University of Louisville and a member of the Anchorage Presbyterian Church.
