Traveled to Florida and back, using Maps on the Jeep, a Garmin stand alone GPS
and the iPhone.

I updated the Garmin, new firmware and new maps.

The Jeep update was close to $600.00, at those prices of the maps will remain
the 2014 vintage.

The iPhone is always updated, just upgraded to iOS 10.0.2

We are ready, lets hit the road….

I’ll try to keep this short but the results were humorous ….

The Jeep would give me one distance and tell me to turn left, the Garmin would
give me another distance and tell me to turn right, the iPhone would tell me
yet a third distance and tell me to go straight…

I learned that the Garmin and the Jeep were more sensitive to small road
changes, thus the differences, so if a road would split from my road they would
tell me miles in advance to be sure and take the main road, the iPhone knew I
was an Apple Geek and could figure these things out…stay on my road until she
said to turn…and boy with the new update on the Apple Watch the physical turns
really shake your arm, so if the phone is in the console I don’t even have to
look at it, with Siri’s voice and the watch beating up on my wrist I knew when
I was to turn or had arrived at my destination.

One caveat for the Jeep and the iPhone. In parts of Alabama the folks think a
Cell Tower is a place of incarceration of solitude high off the ground….my AT&T
cell phone and my wife’s Verizon Cell neither had service for miles…so now the
reason for the Garmin GPS which uses Satellite….I was still connected…

The iPhone was marvelous, not missing a beat and I also learned what most of
you may already know…about time to eat, we tried to have lunch at Panera Bread
where possible…so going along with the map doing it’s thing we ask Siri where
is the nearest Panera Bread…she brings to screens the closest….touch it and now
a NEW map appears, I can dismiss it or allow her to take me to lunch….If I
don’t want the one she suggest I wait and she goes back to the original map.

When finished eating we are back to the original map and puttering along with
our Captain in charge of getting us where we want to go.

While in Destin wanting to go to a restaurant or whatever most sites when you
click on “map” it takes me to Google Maps, and I wait and wait for it to
load…..wish Apple could fix the default from these sites to Apple Map so I copy
the address and enter into Apple Maps and instantly they load and never miss my
destination.

I also listen to books as I drive and the book pauses when Siri wants to tell
me something, maybe it’s the Bose earbuds but the Siri voice sure sounds much
younger, personal and quite lovely…I was starting to need more conversation
with this lady, she was very soothing….

Finally, Siri would come on and say that 25 miles ahead there was a traffic
jam, if I took the route she suggested I would save 25 minutes…really? Was
this old data? Was it real? This had NEVER happened before so I didn’t listen
to her and sat in traffic at least 2 hours…on the two different occasions that
were traffic jams…oh, will I learn?

It’s been awhile since I have revisited Maps, I thought this might help someone
on the list…you never know.
