John and Harry, the 1960 version of Magnificent Seven was based on the 1954 Akira Kurosawa film that started it all: Seven Samurai. It looks fairly dated now (it was filmed in B&W, too), but was pretty much a masterpiece at the time. The characterization of the many and various characters is very good and quite entertaining. It firmly established Kurosawa as a master director and Toshiro Mifune as a powerhouse leading actor.
It is one of my favorite films, although I really like some of Kurosawa’s later stuff quite a bit, too. It is hard to find a decent used copy for cheap, as there are probably not a lot of collectors who would let theirs go. You can rent it on Amazon, though, I see. Oh, and I do not have a copy of it myself, or I’d let you borrow it. The last time I saw it was on a rented VHS. Sorry.
