Do you have any other devices which sync your contacts? I could imagine that a bad sync from a new device could wipe things out. FWIW, I go to File > Export > Contacts Archive... to make an archive on my machine every week or so, and do the same thing with my Calendar, just in case of such a disaster, because I believe that not all info about either one is/must be stored locally. Some of the info is on the cloud, and I still don't trust having things just on the cloud.
