Hey all, Last month, after a 2-day drive to New Hampshire, my mid-2012 MBP started running its fans wildly [1] and randomly shutting down and rebooting without any kernel panic screen. The sensors were often showing >100ÂșC.
Googling suggested that perhaps the RAM modules were loose [2]. So... before cracking the case, I safe-booted, reset the NVRAM, and reset the system management controller. I ran the Apple Hardware Test to see if there was bad RAM. (I ran extended testing, but not repeatedly; it ran for about 1/2 hour on my 8GB of RAM.) The test detected nothing. I kept having random reboots. I then reseated the RAM, and (somewhat) cleaned out the dust kittens. When I did this, I noticed that the replacement hard drive, a Samsung SSD, could move up and down. I did nothing to fix this, just puzzled over it. Anyways, the the high fan speeds and reboots ended. Unfortunately, on Saturday night (last day before driving back to Louisville) I got a kernel panic when I attached the power supply during the middle of a backup to an external USB drive (Chance that this jiggled the usb cable to the external drive: 30%). FWIW, the reboots were not entirely random. They seemed to happen most likely when The sensors were showing high temps The computer was waking from sleep External power changed state (i.e. I was either connecting or disconnecting the power supply) I was not jerking my laptop around in any way (it was sitting on a table). Does anyone have any ideas on how I could track down the problem and decide whether I need a new computer? [3] Any tips would be much appreciated, Bill [1] I was running under heavy load at some times, but there was little memory pressure and the weather was not at all hot. [2] Or that there could be problems from 3rd-party RAM, but this doesn't apply here. [3] Ugh. I like the mid-2012 because it has lots of useful ports and a nice magsafe adapter. _______________________________________________ MacGroup mailing list Posting address: [email protected] Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/> Answers to questions: <http://erdos.math.louisville.edu/macgroup/>
