In the view of messages in a mailbox, you can choose to view only the unread 
emails. There are at least three ways to toggle this view:

(1) -L (or command-L) turns it on and off.

(2) The menu item View>Message Filter.

(2) At the left-top of the message list for any mailbox is a triangle in a 
circle. Click on it.
