All your traffic is bouncing through at least one more node, so, of course it
will be a little slower. It shouldn’t be a lot slower. It has nothing to do
with your WiFi.

To test how much slower things are, you can use a ping test. Run
Applications/Utilities/Network Utility and click on the Ping selection. Pick
one of your favorite addresses; e.g., www.apple.com <http://www.apple.com/>,
and type it in. When you click the Ping button, you’ll get a list of round-trip
times for packets to the server and back. When I tried www.apple.com
<http://www.apple.com/> just now I got

(It says the address is e6858.dsce9.akamaiedge.net
<http://e6858.dsce9.akamaiedge.net/> because Akamai is Apple’s CDN.) Then I
tried it again with the VPN turned on.
