John, I know it doesn't help now, but the "Apple approved" way to remove older
Time Machine backups is through Time Machine itself which may prevent the
issues with trying to empty the trash down the road. I stumbled across this
feature a few years ago. Here's how to do it.

How to delete old Time Machine backups

1) Click the Time Machine icon in your Menu Bar to open Time Machine.

2) Navigate to the desired date.

3) Locate the session you want to delete from Time Machine then click the gear
icon and select Delete Backup.

4) Confirm you want to delete the session, and enter your administrator
password if required. Time Machine will then delete the session.
