If you're just getting started it's probably a bit much to bite off. It started out simple and then turned into kind of a beast. ;-) Particularly if you're not familiar with ColdSpring yet it's probably a bit much.
I did a Mach-II photo gallery a while back that I don't believe was using ColdSpring--let me see if I can dig that up. It's dated at this point and wouldn't be all ajaxified but might be a decent small app.
Also, the Mach-II Contact Manager is a nice small app to study if you haven't looked at that one. It too is a bit dated but again, the basics haven't changed so it's a good place to start.
