I've used filters and event mappings before.

What I'm asking, in a more general  sense, is how are simple expressions
used in mach ii? Anyone have any example code?

If you are using a <call-method /> use a filter, but if you are pulling
the query through a listener go with an <event-mapping />. I think these
2 provide you with a cleaner solution.
