I haven't written a lot of personal stuff for the Mac EvangeList, even
though I do write a lot; I am currently writing 2 books. This time though I
couldn't help myself. Some will surely tell me I should've just kept my
mouth shut...

iPodunk - by Shane Anderson

A small, remote, insignificant place. Exactly the place the iPod will hold
in Apple's history.

About the only thing groundbreaking in Apple's new iPod is the discovery
that the reality distortion field is firmly in place at Apple today.
Actually, that might not be that groundbreaking a discovery afterall.

The hype at MacWorld New York was a bubble waiting to be burst - one
inflated by the Mac press. This time around, Apple itself must bare the full
brunt of responsibility.

Never before have I been so embarrassed for Apple. What was touted as being
groundbreaking was simply a small, not even a significant, refinement on
technology that is in daily use by millions already.

The iPod is neither groundbreaking nor revolutionary - it is merely
evolutionary.

There are some nice features, so let's go over them. You can store 1000
songs - good, although competing products can hold 4 times as much. It has a
10 hour battery life - reasonable, but my MiniDisc has a 66 hour battery
life on a single AA batt. It has a large LCD display - good, but no LCD
control on the cord. It has a backlit LCD - So does my MiniDisc and most
other MP3 players. It has a nice interface. It syncs with iTunes. It
recharges over FireWire. It uses the very latest in battery technology,
Lithium Polymer. It can be used as a FireWire Hard Drive. It has an
innovative scroll wheel. 32MB anti-skip. Certainly nothing here is close to
making the iPod a "breakthrough digital product".

Now let's look at some of the not so good point. It takes 3 hours to fully
recharge, not an hour as some reports suggest. It is not very small compared
to other MP3 players. It is horrendously expensive. Apple has just started
selling iMacs in certain places for just $100 more. Other MP3 players are
much cheaper. It really doesn't look very nice, it is so bland. It is only 5
GB, while competing products are up to 20GB for the same money. It is a Hard
Drive, which means drop this baby while the drive is spinning and kiss your
400 bucks goodbye. No sound in, no equalizer settings. No 'hold' button to
prevent buttons from being pressed while in your pocket, and no chance I'm
foolish enough to buy one.

In reality, it lacks a lot of what other players do and you pay a premium
for it because, well, because Steve thinks you should.

Hey, it is a nice product, it just needs to be half the price, and it should
never have received a "groundbreaking" moniker. Perhaps the groundbreaking
part is going to be the quarters balance sheet that will show how many
suckers actually bought one.
