2. QXPM4: Option + F-key Shortcuts on newest G4s and iMacs

We have discovered a conflict between QuarkXPress F-key shortcuts which
use
the Option key, and the new Keyboard control panel (v8.5) which comes
pre-installed with Mac OS 9.0.4, but only on the newest PowerMac
computers
which ship with the new Apple Pro Keyboard (models to date include: the
G4
Multi-Processor, G4 Cube, and Summer 2000 iMacs). This new Keyboard
control
panel apparently intercepts the Option key, and does not pass the signal
on
to the QuarkXPress software.
The result is that F-key shortcuts which use the Option key (e.g.,
Option-F5
to bring an item Forward one layer, or Shift-Option-F5 to send an item
Backward one layer) will function as if the Option key had not been
depressed (e.g., F5 brings an item all the way to the Front, or Shift-F5
sends an item all the way to the Back).
At present, the only workarounds we can offer are to either:
(A) Disable the new Keyboard control panel version 8.5 (however, this
will
mean that you cannot change keyboard language maps); or
(B) Remove the Keyboard control panel v8.5 and install the previous
version,
8.4. To the best of our knowledge, running the older version on the
newer
computers with the Apple Pro Keyboard is safe.
