I am also working with PRU stepgen now and having issues / questions..
pru_period makes influence for me. Try to increase it and test at
different speeds. I also have to note that the period will influence
maximum PRU encoder count rate..
CONFIG=pru=0 num_stepgens=2 num_encoders=2 pru_period=2500
