Although is was looking for a simple single board  that could both run 
machinekit as well as the motor/servo drives with some power components,  
this might be a more long term solution. 

Already seen the motor/driver packages Clearpath etc, universal drives like 
Granite devices etc.
And also been looking into the DieBieSlave ethercat board with 
onboard STM32F, and Achim Döbler's STM32-based ultimate 3-Phase Motor 
Controller
As some examples that could make a nice ethercat based drive if encoders 
and some features are added.

These approaches would all mean more hardware in total and probably also 
more cost. Besides still needing a separate machine to run machinekit.
Only thing i don't want to do is use this setup as dumb close loop stepper 
without feedback.
