As it turns, while _I_ didn't do anything _Microsoft_ did push an update to the host in the background which always seems to mess up Virtualbox. Supposedly the updated doesn't get applied until I restart the box - that's not quite true in my experience. And resuming any saved VM after restarting the host will hang after the Windows update and needs a cold restart.
